Understanding the Opt Out Process

The CAP program is designed to make access to course materials seamless and affordable, but students who prefer to source their own materials have the option to opt out. There are two levels of opt out:

Opting Out of CAP but Staying Enrolled in Inclusive Access

If you opt out of CAP but remain enrolled in courses that use Inclusive Access (IA) digital materials, you will automatically be charged per item for those materials. Inclusive Access provides digital textbooks and resources at a discounted rate, integrated directly into Canvas.

Fully Opting Out of Both CAP and Inclusive Access

If you prefer to purchase all of your course materials independently, you must opt out of both CAP and Inclusive Access by the add/drop deadline. This means you will be responsible for finding, purchasing, or renting all required textbooks and course materials on your own. Consider this option carefully, as sourcing materials individually may result in higher costs or delays.

Important Considerations:

  • The opt-out deadline aligns with the university’s add/drop period, giving you time to decide.
  • Opting out of CAP does not remove your responsibility for obtaining required materials.
  • If you change your mind, you can opt back into CAP before the deadline.
